Due to the ongoing health issue, the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI) will not be able to run face-to-face summer programs in 2020. NMSBVI will be running an online program for 6 weeks, from June 8th through July 17th. Each day of the week will feature a different content area with specific sessions throughout the day.
Sessions will be conducted via Zoom. Session lengths will be between 45-60 minutes, with the Preschool & Early Elementary sessions being about 30 minutes to accommodate the shorter attention spans of younger students. Session times will be scheduled shortly, after more consultation with families who have expressed interest in the summer program.
Sessions will have a limited number of participants in order to allow for greater interaction between the teachers and the students. Because this is an on-line program, NMSBVI does not need a camp application. Social Skills for Beginners: will discuss, model and role play for various settings including greeting someone new, how to start a conversation and how to end an conversation in an appropriate manner.
Social Skills for Teens: Topics will include conflict resolution and passive/aggressive qualities in disputes. In this class we will also answer questions regarding healthy relationships and how to develop and maintain them in a positive manner
Self Advocacy: Session will discuss why self advocacy is important and ways to be assertive in getting the required outcome. We will have open conversation about settings in which self advocacy should be used and discusses outcomes.
Money Skills for Younger Students: In this class younger students will be given a method of folding money and organizing money in a wallet. This will be done using demonstration and verbal guidance.
Cooking for the Intermediate Chef: This class will be for the student who has some cooking experience. This will be focused on safety in the kitchen and building confidence, reading a recipe and identifying strengths and improving weaknesses, making a shopping list and cost estimation of desired meal. We would like to prepare a students desired meal with parental support.
Job Skills: This session is for the young adult who needs to build skills in filling out a job application, interviewing tips and assistance in building soft skills. Pertinent information will be discussed about the process of job hunting, making that first impression and more.
Functional Math: calculating strategies, money skills, comparing measurements, time skills
5th/6th grade level math: fractions & decimals, number lines & absolute value, exponents, percents
7th/8th grade level math: scientific notation, unit rates, converting common units of measurements, geometric formulas
Algebra 1/Integrated Pathway 1: Mean, Median, Mode, and Range, Order of Operations, Graphing and solving algebraically linear equations, rate of change and slope
Geometry/Integrated Pathway 2: Angles and their measures, triangles/quadrilaterals, Pythagorean theorem, polygons and circles
Algebra 2/Integrated Pathway 3/Pre-Calculus: Exponents and Radicals, polynomials and factoring, rational expressions, equations and solutions of equations
Early Math (Pre-K-2nd): A variety of activities that support numeracy and simple mathematical concepts. Activities will allow for exposure to numbers and understanding of basic mathematical concepts.
Intermediate Math (3rd/4th grade): Lesson and activities that will support intermediate math concepts and allow student to be exposed to mathematical concepts they will use in the real world.
Elementary Reading (Pre-K-2nd): Short story read alouds and follow up activities that support emerging literacy skills.
Intermediate Reading (3rd/4th grade): A read aloud book that will engage students. Follow up activities that will provide literacy skills will conclude the session.
Arts/Crafts (Pre-K-2nd): Opportunities to create and make different art or crafts with materials that are in your household.

MAC Computer/Laptop: Device comparison, keyboard shortcuts, and more- In this class we will discuss all things MAC computers/laptops. We will discuss how they are the same and how they are different. We will incorporate the use of different keyboard shortcut commands that are used on these types of devices.

i-Devices (iPad and iPhone usage): Learn more of how to use the basic and advanced options on iPad and iPhone include suggested Apps for everyday living and use
Minute to Win It: Can you beat the clock as well as others when typing. Various devices are welcome- i-Devices, laptops, desktop computers and more. Practice keyboarding skills while competing with other to build your speed
Braille Note Takers: This is an overview of how to use two different types of braille note taking devices. We will compare the Braille Note Touch and the Braille Sense Polaris. We will incorporate how to use the devices and what they have to offer. (If help is needed for one device over the other, help is available in this session.)
Internet Safety and What That is All About: Do you need help understanding more of what it means to be internet safe? In this class, we will go over what it take to stay safe and the best ways to do it.
Screen Readers: For those individuals that are needing to learn about JAWS or NVDA screen reader and how to use them, this class is for you. We will discuss the pros for each screen reader and incorporate the sue of different screen reader keyboard commands for access when navigating different programs and the web
Advanced High School Science: Exploration of subject specific classroom and laboratory skills/equipment/ideas/strategies for advanced high school science students with VI. For students who can independently access school materials.
High School Science Fundamentals: Provides students approaching high school age with information regarding equipment/ideas/strategies for accessing high school level science courses for students with VI. Adult help may be required.
High School Kitchen Chemistry: Advanced science experiments and projects that use common kitchen chemicals. Adult help may be required.
Middle School/Upper Elementary Kitchen Chemistry: Basic science experiments and projects that use common kitchen chemicals. Adult helper required.
Middle School/Upper Elementary STEM: Simpler, less involved hands on STEM activities and projects that utilize common household materials for younger students. Adult helper required.
High School STEM: More complex and involved hands on STEM activities and projects that utilize common household materials for older students. Adult help may be required.
